From Rough Waters to Steady Course

Stepping into leadership can often feel like being handed the wheel in the middle of a storm.

One of my clients, newly promoted within the maritime industry, experienced this firsthand. Surrounded by highly experience peers and colleagues — predominantly male — she began to question whether she truly belonged. Every choice was examined closely and even small errors carried weight. In one of our first conversations, she shared: “I’m afraid I’ll never be enough.”

Through focused sparring, we worked on three key areas:

  • Clarifying her core values – establishing them as her true compass
  • Making decisions from clarity, not fear – anchoring confidence in purpose
  • Strengthening her presence – enabling her to communicate with assurance and authority

The transformation was both visible and lasting. She began leading from her own centre. Her confidence grew, and her colleagues responded with respect and trust.

Leadership rarely comes with a manual. Yet, with reflection, practice, and the right support, any leader can move from rough waters to a steady course — guided by purpose and grounded in values.
